The next day, a judge sat in his chambers to help the people resolve their problems - and the people lined up for help from this judge all day long, from morning until night. When the judge's father-in-law saw what was happening, he became very concerned and said, "What is all this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people line up to meet with you from sunrise to sunset?".

And the judge said to his father-in-law, "Because the people are in need of the wisdom God has given me to resolve their issues with each other. When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between one side and the other of the issue. I help them understand what is right and what is wrong, what laws are right and which ones are wrong".

And the father-in-law said to him, "This is not good. You will surely wear yourself out, both you and the people; for this thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform this all by yourself. Now listen to me, son, and I will give you counsel, and help you do it in a more efficient way; a way that is best for the people - in this manner, you will still be able to bring their cases to a proper verdict. Here is how to do it: you will teach them law and order; and thereby you will help them resolve their problems. Go and search out of all the people the most intelligent and honest men, who fear God, and who know the difference between right and wrong. Appoint these men of truth, who hate covetousness, as leaders over the people. Organize them as follows: some as rulers of thousands, others as rulers of hundreds, more as rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. You will then delegate your work to them. Therefore, THEY shall judge the people from day to day, and month to month. Have them bring every severe matter to you, but every small matter will be handled by them. Therefore, it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden WITH you. I beg you to do this thing for your own sake. In fact, I command you to do it. Then you will be able to last and live longer, and all the people will be able to go their way in peace".

So the story goes that this man gave heed to the advice and counsel of his father-in-law and did as he suggested. This man chose capable men from his country, and made them leaders over the people in an orderly fashion. And the people were judged in all their disputes and problems - the hard cases were brought to the judge, but every other matter they judged themselves.

The wisdom and importance of this story needs to be applied in our present political environment. This is a bottom-up political order just like the one our Founding Fathers set up originally in America. Today, we are morphing into a top-down form of government, where the federal leaders tell us what we can and cannot do in every aspect of our lives.
