Abraham Lincoln, Lyceum Address

“. . . Let reverence for the laws be breathed by every American mother to the lisping babe that prattles in her lap; let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in primers, in spelling books and almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, enforced in courts of justice. In short, let it become the political religion of the nation. . . .”

Please Teach Our Nation’s Younger Generation About Patriotism

Dear Citizen of our American Union in Liberty,

American patriotism includes having respect for The Declaration Of Independence. Within that Declaration are found some of the most profound expressions describing the relationship between man and government. Our nation’s very foundation is established on this religious belief: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness-.”

Our rights are upheld in our American society by those who respect God’s truths and laws as they are expressed in the Declaration Of Independence and in the Ten Commandments. We need to realize that our rights can be lost if respect for those truths fail to receive needed attention. When respect for those truths receive little importance in thought, the people’s concern for their liberty also becomes dimmed. As the people then spend their attention on other concerns, unlawful power and privilege over the people’s rights are more easily able to gain advantage.

An e-mail message, in circulation over the internet, is repeated here as follows: 

"As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S. Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world’s law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view ... it is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!"

"As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door."

"As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall, right above where the Supreme Court judges sit, a display of the Ten Commandments!"

"There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, D.C."

"James Madison, the fourth president, known as “The Father of Our Constitution” made the following statement:

"“We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”"

"Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said:

"“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ”."

"Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777."

"How, then, have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220 years in this country is now suddenly wrong and unconstitutional?"

American patriotism includes respect for law. This is at the very foundations of what should be, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, “the political religion of the nation.” He called it “reverence for the laws”.

Our Constitutional laws of liberty “under God” are what bind our people together into our Union. Our freedom to be a people who have rights, and who are free to be independent and individually different, is the reason for our Union.

The strength of our Union is in the overwhelming majority of the people who have respect for both God’s truth and our laws. While most Americans will acknowledge that American patriotism is inseparable from having respect for God’s truth, they will, at the same time, fight with trust in God for the right to not have such respect.

Our Constitution is the people’s stand against tyranny. Our Constitution gives us our laws to live by that protect our rights to be free from oppression and foreign control.

Thomas Jefferson warned us against letting our confidence in man outweigh our concerns for our rights. He said, “In questions of power, then, let not more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution”.

Beginning with the revolutionary war for our freedom and independence, we became known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. With trust in God, we mutually pledged to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor in support of our Declaration Of Independence.

With the help of God, we won that first battle for independence. In the spirit of victory, we now choose liberty under the laws of our United States Constitution.

With the help of God, we won that first battle. Because of evil in the world, it is only with God’s help and patriotic vigilance that liberty continues to be kept alive today.
