National Chairman's Letter
May 2000
Dear Members and Friends of the Independent American Party,
It is now official: Howard Phillips is the IAP Presidential Nominee! and Dr.
Curtis Frazier is the IAP Vice Presidential Nominee! Both men were elected
unanimously as our party's nominees by the National Convention of the
Independent American Party. The Convention was convened briefly in special
session for this purpose on May 13 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Convention will
convene again in regular session for other business during the IAP National
Conference scheduled for July 14-15, 2000.
Howard Phillips, 61, has served as Chairman of the Conservative Caucus since
1974. He is the founder of the US Taxpayers Party (now-named Constitution
Party), and served as it Presidential Nominee in 1992 and 1996. He is the 2000
Presidential Nominee of the Constitution Party. He is married, has six children,
and resides in Vienna, Virginia.
Dr. Curtis Frazier, 44, is a medical doctor specializing in emergency
medicine. He is State Chairman of the Constitution Party of Missouri. He was his
party's candidate for US Senate in 1998. He is presently the 2000 Vice
Presidential Nominee for the Constitution Party. He is married, has seven
children (all home-school taught), and resides in Springfield, Missouri.
Joseph Sobran, a conservative columnist, was originally the Vice Presidential
Nominee of the Constitution Party. But he withdrew his candidacy in March. Dr.
Frazier was then named to fill the vacancy at least until another Vice
Presidential candidate with national stature could be found. The Constitution
Party hopes to recruit Republican Presidential candidate Alan Keyes for its Vice
Presidential slot after the GOP National Convention in early August.
Human Events magazine, regarding the consequences of the GOP possibly
amending its pro-life plank at its National Convention, has quoted Alan Keyes as
saying, "... millions of pro-life Republicans such as myself will leave the
party if it drops or amends its pro-life position ... if it does happen, I
expect I will leave the Republican Party and join Howard Phillips."
Concerning the Utah IAP Presidential Primary held March 10: I reported the
unofficial vote tallies in my March letter. I now have the official tallies
which includes absentee ballots. Howard Phillips gained just seven more votes
and Earl Dodge gained just three more votes. That shifted the percentage between
them by two-tenths of one percent in favor of Howard. The final IAP tally:
Howard Phillips 630 votes (56.8%) and Earl Dodge 480 votes (43.2%). The IAP is
grateful that both men, Howard (of the Constitution Party) and Earl (of the
Prohibition Party), would cross party lines to participate in the IAP
Presidential Primary in Utah.
Yours for Freedom!
Bruce Bangerter
IAP National Chairman
