Conference HighLights
March 3-4, 2000
Salt Lake City, Utah
Our third National Conference was very special with presidential
candidates Howard Phillips (in person) and Earl Dodge (on audio tape) as
our chief speakers.
Evening Social
We kicked off our National Conference with a Friday
evening social at Home Town Buffet restaurant in Taylorsville (Salt
Lake) Utah. None of our Saturday speakers were able to attend the
social, but those of us who came enjoyed dining and visiting with each
other.
Business Meeting
Saturday morning, we held our National Committee business meeting in
a board room at the Salt Lake County Offices, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
We discussed plans for our upcoming National Convention, considered
proposals for a future National Platform by Lee McKenzie (of Utah), and
adopted a resolution by Dan Hansen (of Nevada) on land-use.
For our National Convention, we decided that if Howard Phillips won
the Utah presidential primary, that we would hold a brief convention as
early as possible (at Howard's request) and in conjunction with the Utah
IAP nominating convention. If Earl Dodge won, we would hold our
convention in conjunction with our next National Conference in July.
We also voted by acclamation to retain the current national officers
for a full two-year term. They had been serving a partial term
from when the National Committee was first seated in January 1999.
Freedom Forum
Saturday afternoon we held our Freedom Forum in the Salt Lake County Commission Chambers
in Salt Lake City, Utah.
We began with a press conference for presidential candidate Howard
Phillips, which was covered by the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper and KTVX
Channel 4 television.
We then held opening ceremonies. We heard from candidate Howard
Phillips live for 35 minutes. And we listened to an audio tape of
presidential candidate Earl Dodge for 20 minutes. (Howard is also
the presidential nominee of the Constitution Party and Earl is also the
presidential nominee of the Prohibition Party.)
We heard from Dan Hansen (the IAP Chairman of Nevada). We had a
question-and-answer period with Howard and with Lee McKenzie (acting as
a surrogate for Earl). We heard from Will Christensen (the IAP
Chairman of Utah). We then adjourned the conference.
