Conference HighLights
July 7-9, 2000
Salt Lake City, Utah
Our fourth National Conference had activities on three different
days. We had a special event with our presidential nominee Howard
Phillips, and activities with Sarah Ward of the WCTU and Dan Phillips of
the IAP of Nevada.
Candidate Breakfast
On Friday morning, we had a candidate's breakfast and
press conference with presidential nominee Howard Phillips and a number
of Utah IAP candidates and other guests. The Salt Lake Tribune
newspaper and Fox-13 television both sent reporters. The event was
at a Denny's restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah. Howard's schedule
required him to leave Utah right after the event.
Evening Social
On Friday evening we had a restaurant social at Home
Town Buffet in Taylorsville (Salt Lake) Utah. We enjoyed the
buffet and visiting with each other, and we were treated with impromptu
talks by our two Saturday speakers -- Sarah Ward and Dan Hansen.
Business Meeting
Saturday morning, we held our National Committee business meeting,
but we had little business to conduct. We heard state reports from
the IAP of Nevada and the Utah IAP. Dan Hansen gave a report on
the Jarbidge Declaration which is related to the "Shovel
Brigade" effort in Nevada. We also accepted Dr. Curtis
Frazier as a vice presidential replacement nominee for Joseph Sobrans
(who had resigned from the race).
Luncheon Activity
Prior to lunch, we had a seminar by Daniel Newby of the Sutherland
Institute on "Effective Community Involvement." We
enjoyed a hoagie luncheon. Then we heard from the major Utah IAP
candidates: Hartley Anderson - US House #1, Carlton Bowen - US
Senate, Jeremy Friedbaum - Governor, Lee McKenzie - Lt. Governor, and
Bruce Bangerter - US House #2. (Mike Lehman - US House #3 was
unable to attend.)
Freedom Forum
Saturday afternoon we held our Freedom Forum in the Salt Lake County Commission Chambers
in Salt Lake City, Utah. We heard from Dan Hansen of the IAP of
Nevada. And we heard from Sarah Ward of Indiana who is President
of Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She spoke on
"Alcohol in America." The event was covered by reporters
from the Deseret News, Salt Lake Tribune, and Brigham Young University
Daily Universe newspapers.
