A PROCLAMATION
POW/MIA Recognition Day
September 19, 2008
WHEREAS, Thousands of Americans who have served in times of war were captured by the enemy or reported missing in action; and
WHEREAS, Over 2,000 Americans are still missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, and approximately 8,000 are unaccounted for from the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, During the last century, Communist and former Communist nations have made a practice of only repatriating a portion of those captured by their armed forces, and
WHEREAS, The sacrifices of American prisoners of war, Americans missing in action, and their families are deserving of our recognition; and
WHEREAS, Each year, our nation observes National POW/MIA Recognition Day on the third Friday in September; and
WHEREAS, Each year, on National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we acknowledge with special gratitude and profound respect those who paid for our freedom with their own, and we remember with deep sorrow those whose fate has never been resolved; now
THEREFORE, we the Mayor and City Council of the city of Mesquite, Nevada proclaim September 19, 2008, the Third Friday of September, and every Third Friday of September thereafter, POW/MIA Recognition Day in the City of Mesquite, and urge every citizen of Mesquite to remember and give thanks for those who sacrificed so much in the service of our country. |
